Biomaterial

My main idea for creating biomaterials was to use food waste and transform it into useful materials. I wanted to create a regenerative circular economy by using waste from the food supply chain. However, I had trouble finding specific examples of biomaterial recipes, so I conducted my own research and experiments. I focused on two main biomaterials: pomegranate and fruit waste from a local business called Ideya. I wanted to create a symbiotic relationship between food waste and biomaterials, to create a prevention for mass waste production. I plan to source donations from the local community or work with local businesses in Brighton to make this functional. To educate people about our biomaterials, I plan to create a page on my website that showcases the qualities and recipes for the materials. I want both online and exhibition audiences to understand the materials, with the latter experiencing them through sensory elements.

Experimenting with the biomaterials was a fun but challenging process, I kept getting dishearted when the material didn’t end up how I envisioned but through further experimentation and research I was able to come out with my desired texture and materials, a lot of my products have come into the category of Bioleather’s and for future developments, I need to work with them as leather and innovate the building blocks of curating into bio advances. I’ve been interested in Biodesign for a long period due to my perception of it being a sustainable path for the fashion industry, I’m happy with my outcomes and feel confident in the qualities of my recipes. Through my discussion with Victoria Generary, we talked about working with biomaterials long term to provide a sustainable outcome, mass production could make Biodesign unsustainable or forming garments out of non-bio materials such as polyester thread or glue. These points stood out to me through our discussions as I’m planning on making garments this is important I’m planning on sealing my garments with casin glue and treating the materials in the same manner as leathers but with bio alternatives. I’ve included a video of the process of the biomaterials that I have posted on the Symbiosis TikTok page, the audio behind it is the ASMR of the process, the involvement of ASMR is going to be large to involve a different narrative of the process of the biomaterials.
