Creative Director research

When starting this project, the role of art director I didn’t completely understand the roles and responsibilities Aswell as established successful practitioners, as most of our projects haven’t had specific roles. So, I started to undergo some research into the creative director process and some influential art directors that inspire me.

Artem Matyushkin:

Based in both New York and Moscow, Artem Matyushkin is an Art Director and graphic designer who has a strong eye for typographical design. Having worked with MoMA, Dover Street Market, Totokaelo, and Condé Nast, his work is refined and highly technical. Often sticking to a soft color palette and curved type, his designs are unmistakably his own. Some of my favorite pieces on Artem’s feed were designed for Bambule and consisted of vibrant yet trippy graphics that make you crave more. Matyushkin I is currently the Art Director for the company’s nonobjective works. As I am passionate about typography, seeing his unique takes on using fonts and typography for advertising inspires me and motivates me to push graphic boundaries. His website shares a lot of helpful insight when researching Matyushkin, the page has no imagery and is all type. Through reading the page I feel like it represents him completely, he talks about his upbringing in Ukraine and his current thoughts on the war, discusses his recent obsessions within his work, as well as context to his practice. I really like and have enjoyed researching Matyushkin as I feel he is a creative who is very open with his process and innovative within his work.

“With a strong belief that design is more than just visuals, Artem sees it as a way of thinking, a frame-work that one uses to research context and structure ideas, information, and, after all, visual elements. “Good design” is the one that exists in the right context: this makes the designer a context curator.”

Carla Palette:

With a bio proudly stating, “I’m Not for Everyone,” you know that Carla Palette’s work is beautifully provocative, intense, and alternative. Her feed comes filled with color and bold and unique typefaces, and she often shares other designers’ work that inspires her. While based in Berlin, Carla works with global beauty, fashion, food, and lifestyle brands. So, while she might not be for everyone, her work certainly is. She is a Berlinbased brand designer and art director who strives to create a provocative and influential brand experience by challenging people and brands to make bold and unconventional statements that acknowledge the current social tension around them. Palette was a larger influence on our initial ideas but still with Nosy I love her process and her aspirations. Reading about her process and journey through her career has influenced me and as well as her process I overall love the style of her work and I think released a friendly and calm aesthetic which correlates to Nosy’s brand aesthetic.
