In today’s lecture we did two tasks, in the morning we started experimenting with layout and created mini zines. We experimented with layout and concept pages, within my group we decided that we shouldn’t collaborate initially to show each other how individually we visualize the magazine and to display our strengths. After the workshop, we looked at each other and productively discussed what we liked and didn’t like as well as listened to feedback from Chris when reviewing our zines. My zine is shown below.

In the second part of the lecture we were looking into the graphic language of magazines, within this half we did a series of activities researching and looking into a range of non-major brands magazines and looking at the graphic features. On the left are some of the features we recognized from the magazine we were looking at, we started off by looking into Spoon Magazine which is an ad-free fine art, a slow fashion photography magazine. We were all in love with this magazine and before we knew the full concept we interstate it as a fashion and travel magazine by interpreting who we thought this was marketed at and the content within. Through this lecture, we tried to familiarize ourselves with graphic design terminology which was fun and interesting to learn about the different techniques used graphically and identify them. The features I saw are listed above on lined paper.
The magazine brought us a lot of ideas and inspiration and fueled a lot of creatively productive conversations on visually how we want our magazine to be presented. Our notes from these conversations are on the right here. Through looking into graphic features and collectively starting to understand the terminology and details we instantly started to consider these features within our magazine which I felt was super constructive and helped us all understand the concept more and what we want to produce after discussing: names, format budgeting, shoot ideas, promotional features including a playlist, and content ideas.
