After being introduced to the editorial brief, my notes from this lecture are below. I was really excited to know my group and to see what role I would be given. Being excited to see what our initial ideas would be and the constructive team discussions surrounding our concepts. After being talked through what needed to be included within the zine and the content production I was planning ahead of potential articles and layouts for the final outcome to initiate my creative brainstorming that could initiate my group’s idea generation.
When formed in our groups, initially we started with a mind map of potential concept ideas, we favored an idea centering around informing our audience ( that would be 18+) on having a healthy and safe relationship with sex and sexual health. We would present this idea in a light-hearted informative way recreating teen magazine style with additional clutter, involvement of a goodie bag, and a specific bright color scheme. We want to explore some themes revolving around consent, STIs, effective contraception, and creating a healthy and positive relationship individually with sex.
After this idea process, I explored and thought about the concept, individually curating these two sketchbook pages which involve a refined mind map based on the group’s collective ideas and catered more towards our product as well as two mini mood boards reflecting the imagery, graphics, and illustrations inspiration for this magazine. I’m very happy with this concept and think it is a powerful topic however I understand that there is an extra caution regarding safeguarding and ethics surrounding this idea but I think the importance of this topic revolving around making sex talked about and discussed rather than the miscommunication and taboo that surrounds sex education currently.
