Kate fletcher being the first sustainable activist/photographer I’m going to look into in detail; I looked into this project and I found her interesting and intriguing. With her interest in fashion alongside her interest in sustaining the climate. In this sketchbook page, I talk about her outcome after a two-day meeting at Cambridge discussing the point within this “era of climate change and massive population increase: how do we reduce the environmental impact of producing and consuming materials’ ‘ Kate Fletcher (2018). After the meeting, the conclusion was technology is good at reducing but it has its limits and we’re up against them now. Her response to the meeting was to create a research chain on reusing clothes and materials and other sustainable ways communities have created items of clothing. She used a book to document her research and it was called “The craft of use”.
Above is the book cover and a page from the book. The story of the image describes the jumped the model is wearing he bought it from a suspected unethical brand that is sustainably corrupt however due to the length the model has had that jumped, being 24 years, can confirm the brand into wasting less and himself not being compelled into fast throwaway fashion due to the length of time he has had the jumper and maintained it. Within the book, there are lots of interesting stories from a variety of people talking about sustaining their clothes and how they manage to keep their clothes in a sustainably active way being cautious and conscious of the impact the fashion industry has. These different perspectives of communities from all different backgrounds fueled me with curiosity on how people within the fashion industry view sustainability as that’s the career they’re surrounded by and I’m hoping to interview a stylist working with a high-end brand and how he considers sustainability.
