Anna Piaggi Research

After looking at Alfa Castaldi I felt like I needed to look into Anna Piaggi herself and her character, firstly researching her work and how she became her personal character which I looked into in the page below. Looking into her Doppie-Pagine and her exhibition after she died at the V&A. I found it really interesting her perception of fashion and how she described it as a “Trance” and how she doesn’t take fashion too seriously and likes to enjoy the clothes she wears rather than whatever is trendy or in fashion at the time. I think this element of her character can explain some of alfas imagery with her modeling explaining the abstract take with her modeling leaving questions for curiosity and humor not to be taken too seriously and allow some things just to be odd which I really love about her.

My other element of the research was from an article captioned ‘Fashion-ology’ which commented on her V&A exhibition. This specific cut out below looks into the perception of gender with Anna Piaggi and how she carried this through all of her fashion. The main thing I collected from this source was the element of being seen as a transgender icon due to her overexaggerated makeup and form built with clothes normalizing the once seen as “grotesque body” due to overexaggerated appearance. This cut out has lots of key inspiration that I have highlighted, it also looks into her view of how powerful the past is especially within fashion, and even if something is old or seen as antique it still can be made fresh and modern and time doesn’t have anything to do with the perception of fashion. Also the element of disguise and poetic emphasis within her work and her appearance also really interested me as that’s how I see anna, she’s wearing a disguise using her clothes as armor.

Finally, I wanted to look only at Anna Doppie-Pagine and the various approaches to forming these pages using a variety of typography, manual manipulation, and imagery. All of her pages have their own premise and unique style. No page looks the same and that inspires me and makes me love her work as it’s not repetitive. The purpose of this mood board was to help me stay inspired for creating my own double-page spread and encourage myself to not be worried to step outside of the box of the mainstream.
