I contemplated on why I had such a large collection of sparkly and glittery items. I thought perhaps maybe it was just human nature, like a magpie, attracted to shiny objects. However, I felt it was more deep routed than that. The collection spans back decades. Wearing something sparkly, or perhaps, even garish made me feel confident. It acted as a cover up deterring from my personality towards my dress, acting as a facade. Research into the book ‘shining cloth’ showed that ancient societies believed that glitter and shiny materials would protect from evil, matching the same reasoning for me wearing glitter.
Therefore, I compiled all my sparkly items together and put them on to create an abstract form, almost like an armour shield or even a glitter monster. I thenĀ madeĀ GIF’s and Screen Prints to emphasise the bright garishness of the glitter collection. I opted to make the imagery kitsch, as a result of the kitsch nature of glitter. Furthermore, both techniques build up in layers – therefore, invoking the idea of covering up. I had to upload the GIF development as an mp4 as the file was incompatible with WordPress.
