IPE between students on the BSc (Hons) Midwifery and BSc(Hons) Paramedicine

Aim of the session:

  • To provide an opportunity for student midwives and paramedics to work together facilitating homebirth scenarios in a realistic environment in order to enhance their interprofessional working relationships

Brief description:

The students have a half day in small mixed profession groups in a Flexible Learning Environment.  They are recorded, visual and audio, as they work collaboratively through various emergency homebirth scenarios. Students that are not taking part observe. The primary focus of the learning is on interprofessional working. After each scenario there is the opportunity to critically reflect on performances.  The experience is evaluated using a questionnaire with quantitative and qualitative elements.

Learning outcomes:

By the end of the session students will be able to:

1: Critically evaluate their own role and the role of their colleagues’, midwifery and paramedic, in pre-hospital emergencies

2: Critically reflect on working within a team, supporting or being proactive in leadership

3: Critically reflect on negotiating in a professional context and managing conflict.
