Applying for a Course: Process Reminders

Tick, tick, tick – make sure all the boxes are complete e

It’s not often we have to send reminders on applying to the University of Brighton and the required documentation needed to apply for one of our courses but this month we are writing to provide guidance on what we expect from a fully formed, robust application. As we hit the summer months for final applications and shortly will be moving into a new recruitment year there are some areas to be addressed as we look towards the future.

Applying for a degree with us is not solely based upon a student’s academic record; it is important that academically students are suitable and prepared to take on the challenges of studying a degree programme, whether undergraduate or postgraduate, but we need to see why it is a student wants to study with us and why it is they have chosen their particular course.

The perfect opportunity to demonstrate this thirst for further education is in the student’s personal statement. This is a chance for our admissions (and in some cases the course leader) to understand why a student is interested in studying their chosen subject, what they have understood they will achieve from the course, what skills and attributes they can demonstrate they have that would be suitable for their subject and to make themselves ultimately stand out! It is a shining example that shows dedication and support for studying with the University. Whilst many of you are fully aware of this, it has become noted that we are receiving applications with very weak personal statements, too-similar statements to peers and too short a statement not demonstrating a student fully understands what course they are applying to.

Unfortunately this means the application is either incomplete and we will request a full personal statement (especially if nothing is provided), therefore making the process of applying longer, or the student risks their chance of studying with us, as their application may be rejected based on their submitted statement.

We love to read why students want to study with us and I’m sure you do too. When a student meets you first in person, explains their desire to study in the UK, applies with your aid and successfully enrols to take the next steps on their successful future journeys, it’s a proud moment. When this happens it shows testament to the support you provide in helping students through their application journey.

Please ensure when submitting applications we have all of the following:

  • Completed application form with full details
  • Copies of previous academic transcripts and certificates
  • English language qualifications (if available)
  • Complete references or the correct contact details for a reference (one for UG, two for PG)
  • A full, well -rounded and thought out personal statement.

Where to Apply

You can apply using your agent portal for postgraduate applications and for undergraduate applications (if the University of Brighton is the student’s only choice). If the student is applying for multiple undergraduate courses, please continue to use UCAS.

Things to remember:

  • If submitting via the portal, you MUST input your agent code in the correct field so we can tag this student to your account.
  • If submitting via UCAS, you MUST send in either a letter of consent to use your services signed from the student or a printed, stamped copy of the UCAS application form so we can tag the application to your account.

Unsuitable, plagiarised or irrelevant personal statements will not go unnoticed. Multiple incidents where this occurs will be taken into account when renewing agreements.
