Your work and career
We’ll help you to get as much as you can out of your time here, so that you can go on to find – or create – work that excites and rewards you. Employability skills, career planning and professional practice are embedded in your course. And many courses have the option of a placement, giving you the professional advantage when you graduate.
- Placements
Placements are a great way to build your confidence, get work experience, earn some money and help decide what career path you want to take. Our friendly staff in the placements office are on hand to help.

- Work for the university
A great way to earn money that fits in around your studies is to work for the university. Roles include student helpers, student ambassadors, advisers, residential accommodation advisers and staff and volunteers for Brighton Students’ Union. Your course team and our careers and employability team will give you their professional advice and support. Visit the website to find out more. Your Students’ Union
There are more than 100 student-led societies you can get involved in. Joining a society is a great way to meet like-minded people, make new friends and learn new skills. Visit the SU homepage to find out more.
Student Support and Guidance Tutors
Our Student Support and Guidance Tutors (SSGTs) are dedicated to supporting any issues which may be affecting your wellbeing whilst at the university. Each academic school has at least one SSGT. They are a great source of information and advice on issues that might be impacting your studies and personal life. New students will be introduced to their SSGT in the first few weeks with us. We don’t just want you to succeed, we want you to feel good too; in yourself and your life, as well as your studies. You can find out more about your support system on our website.
Personal academic tutoring
To help you make the most out of your time at the University of Brighton, you will be assigned a Personal Academic Tutor (PAT) at the beginning of your degree to help you develop skills to achieve your goals, such as guiding you through assessment feedback from all of your modules. Your PAT will be one of the academic staff within your schools and will be your support for all academic aspects of your degree which isn’t related to the content of any individual modules. PATs work closely with your Student Support and Guidance Tutor (SSGT), who will prove support on a range of issues such as homesickness and loneliness, problems with accommodation, transition to Higher Education, stress-related issues and mitigating circumstances.
