Design History PhD graduate Dr Sorcha O’Brien has published her first academic book.
Powering the Nation is the story of the greatest industrial initiative of the fledgling Irish Free State: the Shannon Hydroelectric Scheme.
This visual history examines the construction of this mammoth of modern ingenuity and its symbolic power during the dawn of electrical technology in Ireland.
Dr O’Brien graduated with a PhD in Design History from the University in 2012 and is now a Senior Lecturer in Design History & Theory at Kingston University, London.
She said: “I found Brighton to be very welcoming, personally and intellectually. My PhD looked at the visual representation of the Shannon Scheme … my supervisors were role models of thoughtful, considered engagement with the source materials.”
Powering the Nation is published by Irish Academic Press.
