Groundbreaking Brighton alumna inspires hit BBC trans drama

Award-winning Brighton alumna and Trans rights activist Paris Lees premiered her powerful new drama, adapted from her original 2021 book, ‘What It Feels Like for a Girl’ on BBC Three.

The eight-part series, described by The Independent as “an engaging – and rational – case for optimism”, tells the story of a young person navigating identity, abuse, and transformation in early-2000s Nottingham. Lees, who studied English Language at Brighton, began her gender transition during her time at the university.

Since graduating, she has become a trailblazing journalist and activist – the first transgender woman to appear in Vogue, present on Channel 4 and BBC Radio 1, and founded a UK trans magazine. The drama has been widely praised for its bold, honest storytelling and emotional depth.
