Your journey to starting the Social Work course here at Brighton begins with an interview. This is a chance to go beyond your grades on paper and helps us find out more about your motivations and readiness to work in the field. But that’s not all, the interview is also for you. It’s an opportunity for you to find out more about what the course is all about and allows you to get more of a feel for studying here at Brighton.
Interviews can be nerve-wracking, especially when you’re passionate about the field and eager to make a strong first impression. But as our students share, the interview process at Brighton is designed to be welcoming and inclusive, letting applicants feel like they’re part of a community right from the start.
We make sure to help you feel at ease but taking the time to really listen and offer support throughout the interview. We want you to shine and enjoy the experience.
We asked several of our first year students to tell us a little bit more about their interview process so you can get a feel for what it is like.
For Ariadne, the thought of the interview was initially nerve-wracking, but the reassurance and kindness of the staff put her at ease. She recalls, “The thought of the interview made me anxious. However, the staff reassured me and were kind and patient. I felt as if I got to showcase my personality and skills. There were a few steps to the interview process. However, once I received my offer, I felt a sense of pride, as I’d been hand-picked for this course.”
Rosie also found the interview experience to be hugely supportive. “My interview for Social Work at the University of Brighton was such a positive experience. I was made to feel so relaxed and in control, which allowed me to perform to the best of my ability,” she says. For Rosie, being “supported, listened to, and valued” reinforced her decision to study at Brighton, where she knew she’d be part of a program that put students first.
Another one of our students, Joe, also looks back fondly on the interview process. “I thought having an expert by experience was really good, and both interviewers made me feel comfortable with their demeanour,”
Joe also mentions that the open day played a crucial role in the choice: “The lecturers came across really friendly and knowledgeable,” helping him feel confident in his decision to study here at Brighton.
When Sophie prepared for her interview, she appreciated the structured, welcoming approach that Brighton provided at each step. She describes how “the supportive and personable nature of the teaching staff, which I sensed during my interview, really confirmed that this was the right place for me to study”.
“I had an online interview with two people, which lasted about 40 minutes and included an opportunity to ask questions at the end. Although I felt nervous initially, the interview was well-structured, and I didn’t feel caught off guard by any of the questions. The interviewers were very kind and patient, which helped me feel more at ease once we got started.”
Sophie also benefitted from our “online Q&As, helpful emails with interview advice, and prompt responses to questions before I accepted my place.”
“Reading ‘Understanding Social Work’ by Neil Thompson was also very helpful in preparing me for the interview,” Sophie adds as a top tip for our future students!
We hope that through these student stories you can see that to us the interview process is more than just a formality. We want students to feel connected, valued and excited for what’s to come if they are accepted onto the course.
If you’re ready to take the first step towards a rewarding career in social work, we look forward to meeting you and hearing your story. At Brighton, you won’t just be joining a program; you’ll be joining a network of supportive staff and like-minded students who are all working towards making a positive impact in the world.
