The Welcome Week Experience for Brighton’s Social Work BSc Students

Starting university is a big step and here at Brighton we aim to make sure that every student feels supported and excited about starting this journey with us.

Our Welcome Week helps form a sense of belonging, giving you opportunities to get to know your fellow peers on the Social Work BSc course and ease the transition into university life.

Throughout Welcome Week, we encourage you to get to know the other people on your course. From group games to reflective discussions, we want you to explore each other’s motivations for studying social work and build relationships as a group.

We also make sure to give students an insight into social work as a profession as well as the learning and assessment styles you’ll see throughout the course.

Joe, one of our current BSc students, shared: “Lots of effort was put in to help everyone get to know each other, and the activities were actually quite fun! They also extensively covered all the support services Brighton University offers.”

On top of Welcome Week, we have an extended induction period to make sure that all of our students know what support services are available. From the Skills Hub and well-being services to career development advisers and the Brighton Students’ Union, these sessions are designed to equip students for both academic success and personal development.

When asked for some advice to share with future students, Joe emphasised the importance of developing connections: “Have chats with peers and explore Brighton! Everyone on the course will be interesting and unique, and I’m sure sharing a lot of feelings that you do.”

But it’s not just here at the university where we want you to feel welcome. The city of Brighton is a place where you can feel supported, make connections and truly feel like you belong. Joe, who had already lived in Brighton before starting the course, described the city as “an incredibly welcoming city full of great people, communities, and a place for anyone to find a strong belonging.”
