University of Brighton gains prestigious national award for advancing racial equity

Brighton is awarded the Race Equality Charter (REC) Silver Award by Advance HE, becoming one of only six universities in the UK to hold prestigious recognition.

The REC framework is designed to improve the representation, progression and success of Black and minority ethnic staff and students in higher education. The Silver Award acknowledges the university’s significant progress in advancing racial equity and its commitment to continuing this work.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Donna Whitehead said: “This award is a powerful recognition of the role that equity and inclusion play in everything we do at Brighton. It reflects the dedication of our staff and students in challenging inequity, celebrating diversity and driving meaningful change across our institution.”

It continues to work to address disparities in student degree outcomes for those from Black and minority ethnic backgrounds, improve the representation of Black and minority ethnic staff in senior roles, and ensure inclusive and equitable recruitment and progression practices across the institution.

Professor Whitehead continued: “This award is not the end of our journey, but a platform from which we will continue to build a truly equitable university for all.”

This commitment to equity is at the heart of the university’s Distinctively Brighton 2035 strategy, which sets out an aspiration to become the first-choice university for equity – where every student, from every background, achieves outstanding outcomes and thrives as an agent of change.

Alongside the REC Silver Award, Brighton holds a Silver Athena Swan Charter award for gender equality, is a Stonewall Diversity Champion, and is a Disability Confident employer — all of which demonstrate its ongoing efforts to create a more equitable, inclusive and supportive environment for all staff and students.
