Who is Marie?

Marie-Bénédicte Dembour is a Professor of Law and Anthropology at the University of Brighton’s Business School.

She was born and grew up in Belgium where she first studied law before moving to England to study Social Anthropology at the University of Oxford.

Marie has long been concerned with studying and advocating for migrants’ rights, an interest that has been inspired, in part, by the many migrant friends she has met throughout her life.

Having studied the issue of migrants’ rights extensively for many years, Marie put her findings into a book called When Humans Become Migrants, which was published in March 2015 by Oxford University Press.

This book is the inspiration behind this blog.
