Sky Sports field trip

Sport Journalism third-year students heard about how women’s sport can be covered more responsibly as they visited Sky Sports on a field trip.

Anna Allerton, producer of the Sports Women programme, talked about the challenges of ensuring women’s sport is treated equally to men’s sport in the organisation’s editorial coverage.

Students heard from various industry professionals during their visit to Sky’s HQ in Osterley, West London.

Sky Sports News presenter Rob Wotton offered invaluable interviewing tips, while planning expert Haydn MacKenzie discussed the ethical dimension to editorial decision-making using recent examples such as the Leicester City helicopter crash. Students also heard from graphics duo Jason Landau and Andrew Antoniou about the importance of visual presentation to broadcast journalism.

The programme of events closed with head of journalism training, Laurie Tucker, giving students advice on how to apply for the Sky Sports News graduate training programme.

The aim of the visit was to expose students to a range of insights and perspectives that would help them to understand the diversity of industry roles more and place them in a better situation to make informed career decisions when they graduate next summer.
