Guest lecturer for travel and hospitality students
Daniel Neilson, a freelance travel writer and book editor specialising in travel, has been teaching tourism and hospitality students this term as a guest lecturer.
Daniel has edited more than 25 guidebooks for Time Out, written several books including the recent Wild Pub Walks for CAMRA and edited national magazines such as The Great Outdoors.
He also contributes to magazines and newspapers including National Geographic Traveller, Wanderlust and The Guardian, and also is a regular speaker at the Adventure Travel Trade Association and with National Geographic Traveller.
Daniel was able to bring his real-life experience to the course and has even got students to contribute to real time projects. Currently he is online and special projects editor of adventure journal Sidetracked and works with tourist boards to produce content. He is just about to start work on relaunching a travel brand, based on the learnings he’s covered in the course.
Giedre Mickunaite who is a final year student on our International Tourism Management BA(Hons) degree said: “The lectures with Dan provided an insight of his first-hand experience with destinations and their marketing strategies. Also he gave an idea of tourism industry and its opportunities in sphere like journalism, as not many people consider this when they think of jobs in tourism.
“In addition, he explained very well the processes behind the marketing and distribution of products and services of some big travel and tourism organisations.”
