Active Hearts Walk

Sport and Fitness (top up) BSc student Bronwyn Elsden, along with two fellow students, Amie Jones (Applied Exercise Physiology MSc)and Sabrina Joshua (Sport and Exercise Science BSc), were awarded a Little ECHO grant to host an inaugural family-friendly walk along Eastbourne seafront, raising awareness of the importance of physical activity for heart-healthy living.

The event was aimed at members of the public as well as participants of the Active Hearts Scheme which Bronwyn, Amie and Sabrina are involved with. The Active Hearts Cardiac Rehabilitation Programme is based at the University of Brighton’s Eastbourne Campus and is a 10-week exercise programme designed to help those with certain heart conditions to maintain and/or improve physical fitness, enhance psychological well-being and help reduce some of the risk factors for coronary heart disease.

The walk took place on 25 March 2017 and it is estimated that there were around 100 participants including Caroline Ansell, Eastbourne and Willingdon’s MP, and former MP Stephen Lloyd.

The participants enjoyed the walk along the sunshine coast, one commented: “I really enjoyed the walk. The sun was shining which made it a lovely morning to be by the seaside! I think it was well organised and I saw a few non-Active Hearts members so hopefully it has done the job and raised awareness!”

The Little ECHO grant funded promotional materials for the event, t-shirts worn by walk marshals and Active Heart representatives and a treat at the end of the walk for participants.

Bronwyn, Amie and Sabrina worked hard to make the event a success, and even planned two walks to cater for all fitness levels.

I’m glad that there was the option for the shorter walk because I know I couldn’t have walked the full 5km, 3km was a challenge but I did it! And it was lovely to stick around afterwards for cake and a coffee“.
