Graduate returns to help students
Inma Gonzalez Segura who graduated with a distinction in February from the Tourism and International Development MSc has stayed on at the university to lead PASS sessions for postgraduate students. PASS (Peer Assisted Study Sessions) is a student-led initiative where issues relating to course material and student life can be discussed in a friendly, informal environment with peers and trained student facilitators.
Originally from Spain, Inma completed her International Tourism Management BSc at University College Birmingham having transferred there from Malaga as part of the Erasmus programme. After completing her first degree Inma spent six months looking for the perfect masters programme and kept stumbling upon the MSc in Tourism and International Development at the University of Brighton.
Inma knew she wanted to focus on tourism and poverty alleviation, and with that objective thrived in her mind she went for it!
“It just kind of felt right” Inma told us, “and it was right and turned out to be better than I ever expected. I feel I’ve grown so much. I know myself better”.
Through the programme Inma has learnt how to manage challenging situations in a more efficient and effective way, and her confidence has boosted. Now, with her degree in one hand and a very promising future on the other, Inma is committed to make other students’ experience as successful as hers.
Through leading the PASS sessions once a week, she is helping current students in their understanding of what it is expected from them, and of the masters (and often of the British) educational system.
Alongside her work at the university Inma is working as a receptionist in a hotel while actively seeking a role doing what she most likes: Tourism Consultancy with a focus on sustainable tourism development. She has plans to do a PhD after gaining work experience and is embracing the idea of an academic career further down the line.
Inma has proved that everyone, no matter which nationality, can succeed with the University of Brighton.
