Introducing Disability Games into the PE Curriculum
Following their introductory session to disability sport, our new cohort of student PE teachers had a games training session devoted to teaching pupils who are sight impaired or have movement difficulties.
The Secondary Physical Education PGCE students were shown a range of games that can be practised by all but are particularly suitable for pupils with additional needs. The emphasis of the day was equity and inclusion in PE, with the student teachers gaining an understanding of how to overcome the factors which can inhibit pupils’ ability to learn.
The games introduced to the student teachers were:
- Boccia
- sit-down volleyball
- new age kurling
- goal ball
- parachute games.
PGCE PE Route Leader Dr. Gary Stidder said: “There is no reason why these games should not be on the secondary school PE curriculum. There is a strong educational rationale for their inclusion alongside other more traditional games and would add breadth, depth and balance to pupils experiences in PE lessons.”
