Spotlight on Sport Studies BA(Hons) staff

Sport Studies at the University of Brighton is taught by a team of international experts on a wide range of topics including football culture, fandom and international development.

Course staff also have links to a variety of sport and social justice organisations and campaigns – students can do work on themes or initiatives related to gender equality in sport, challenging racism, supporting disability sport or using sport to address homophobia.

Dr Christopher MatthewsStaff image
Christopher is course leader for Sport Studies BA(Hons) and a lecturer in the sociology of sport. His research has focused on boxing, mixed martial arts and men’s health and his currently projects include exploring Brazilian jujitsu, ice hockey, drugs use in boxing and the maintenance of gender inequality in the workplace.

He has published in a variety of peer review journals and is also the book review editor for the International Journal of Masculinity Studies.


Dr Megan ChawanskyMegan
Megan is a senior lecturer with research interests that include sport participation for girls and women, feminist and girlhood theories of sport and physical culture and sport for international development and peace and was awarded her PhD in Sport and Exercise Humanities in 2008.

Megan’s current research focuses on the transnational sport for development and peace; she has presented at many conferences and much of her research has been published. Read more about Megan
