Lecturer awarded CASES Fellowship
University of Brighton lecturer Alex Bliss has been awarded a Fellowship from the professional body for sport and exercise sciences in the UK – the Chartered Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (CASES).
CASES Fellowship is awarded to recognise esteemed professional achievement, skills, knowledge and service to CASES and the sport and exercise science community and encourages continued service to CASES in leadership and ambassadorial roles.
Alex teaches on the university’s Strength and Conditioning BSc and MSc, Sport Coaching BSc, Sport and Exercise Science BSc and the MSc in Applied Sport Physiology. He is also Editor-in-Chief at the International Journal of Golf Science, board member for Golf Science and the European Tour and Ladies European Tour Research and Scientific Advisory Committee. He has worked for England Golf for over 10 years as a strength and conditioning coach and has supported hundreds of aspiring golfers, ranging from local professionals and amateurs through to winners on the European Tour.
On receiving the accolade Alex said: “The CASES Fellowship means a great deal to me. While the accolade itself and the postnominals are important, what is most pleasing but also humbling for me is to achieve the recognition of my peers. Nothing in my career has been achieved alone and I’ve been fortunate to have some close friends, colleagues, and mentors, many of whom have been a part of CASES and promoted its values.
“The professional body’s values and vision align closely with my own and I therefore feel a great sense of belonging being a part of their community of members. Fellowship status is conferred through appraisal of a portfolio of evidence and to achieve the status means that the awarding committee are satisfied that I have made a considerable and sustained impact with CASES, but also with the Sport and Exercise Science community more broadly.
“I look forward to utilising my Fellowship status to support the professional body, developing CASES members of the future, and most importantly students at the University of Brighton.”
Alex has recently returned to the University of Brighton having previously held the post of Senior Sport and Exercise Science Support Officer and Manager of the university’s Sport and Exercise Science Consultancy Unit.

He said: “I’m thrilled to be back at the University of Brighton. The new Falmer campus facilities, which include CASES accredited sport science labs, are outstanding and provide almost limitless potential for students.
“The time was right for me to rejoin and use my eight years of experience, five as Associate Professor and Subject Lead at St. Mary’s University, Twickenham, and contribute effectively to the School of Education, Sport and Health Sciences community.
“I’m excited to be a part of the Distinctively Brighton 2035 strategy and do what I can to support the university to achieve its vision and mission.”
