S&C placement at Sussex Cricket

Praveen Bhati is an international student on our Strength and Conditioning MSc.

As part of the Personal and Professional Development module Praveen spent time on placement with Sussex Cricket .

We caught up with Praveen to learn about his experience on the course and on placement.

Why S&C

I completed my bachelor’s as a student athlete in accountancy. I wanted to stay away from the corporate world and be close to sports. Therefore, I decided to pursue sports science.

The modules of the course align with the UKSCA accreditation. Covering main components of strength and conditioning, with practical knowledge being provided in world-class labs and gym suites.

Access to the sports and science equipment helps in getting the technical and practical knowledge, which is prominent in today’s advance S&C practices.

The course team

One word – they are the best. They are people who know what they are preaching. Dedicated towards their subject and pupils. I was treated nicely, and they were always there to help me out, be it easy or difficult topic.

My placement

My  placement was with Sussex Cricket. I got in contact with them via information provided by course leader Flo. I had a non-formal interview with Sussex’s strength and conditioning coach.

I was overseeing and guiding academy players during their gym sessions. Helping with exercise technique in the absence of coach. Taking players through warmups and working on their sprint mechanics. Also assessing players through various tests like CMJs and sprint test.

University provides us with theoretical knowledge and also practical in a constricted environment. On placement I can use that theoretical and practical knowledge in a real professional environment. Placement experience also helped gain knowledge of how a sports science department work, emotional intelligence at the work place, and most important be a team player.
