Returning to study – a nursing student’s journey back into education
For many, deciding to return to education later in life can feel a little daunting. Whether it’s balancing studies with family life, adjusting to new methods of learning or simply finding the confidence to take that step, there can be a lot of things to consider.
We spoke with Marianne, an Adult Nursing student who made the choice to return to university later in life. She shares with us what motivated her to pursue nursing, how she’s enjoying student life and also her advice for anyone considering a similar path.
Can you tell us a little about yourself and what led you to pursue nursing at this stage in your life?
“I am 55 years old, married and have one grown up daughter. I live in Brighton with my husband and two cats 😊
“After graduating from the University of Durham in 1990 with a degree in Psychology, I trained and qualified as a Chartered Accountant and then ultimately built a career in HR & Corporate Affairs.”
Had nursing always been an interest of yours, or was there a specific moment that inspired you to take the leap?
“I had always wanted to be a nurse when I was growing up and, even though life initially took me on a different path, I always had that desire and dream in the back of my mind.
“I deliberated as to whether to apply to the course fearing I might be too old to ‘start again’. During 2023, I started volunteering locally with two charities in Brighton. Through my volunteering, I developed a desire to ‘do more’ to support people in our community and society.
“Although I was aged 55 when I started my nursing degree at the University of Brighton last September, I feel young and know I want to channel my energy into a new chapter of my life with meaning and purpose.”
What aspects of the course have been the most rewarding or surprising for you?
“All of it! I was initially nervous about studying again and worried that I might be out of my depth but there is so much support given.
“The University provides students with all sorts of support – from the detailed information given in Welcome Week, to the ongoing support available from the Student Support and Guidance Team, the Writing Advisory Service, Library Support and many others!
“The nursing course attracts students of all ages and from many different backgrounds. It is an incredibly supportive and kind student community, and we all look out for one another.
“The BSc Adults Nursing course is delivered by really talented tutors and lecturers, most of whom continue to also practice as nurses, and they are passionate in helping us to learn and progress through the course modules successfully.”
Can you tell us a little bit more about your placement experiences?
“My first placement was on the Neurology Ward at a local hospital. I was very nervous on my first day, conscious of my lack of any previous healthcare experience, but the ward team were welcoming and really supported me as I went through the placement, allowing me to learn at my own pace.
“During the placement, I built a good understanding and practice of basic nursing care and skills, and also had the opportunity to observe and understand procedures.
“In Neurology, patients have varied communication abilities due to their conditions. I therefore put into practice both verbal and non-verbal communication techniques with patients in order to gain their trust, explain what I was doing and why, and to gain their informed consent.
“It was an incredible learning curve, and some days were of course challenging, but the experience absolutely confirmed to me that my decision to train as a nurse is the right one.”
What advice would you give to other students considering nursing but feeling unsure about taking the first step?
“Go to an Open Day at Falmer and be open with the nursing course staff and students you meet there about your fears or worries. They will reassure you – that really helped me before I put in my UCAS application.
“Go for it! If I can do it, you can too. You will feel supported all the way.”
