Mark Watt speaking to the students

Graduate returns to inspire student teachers

Mark Watt, Assistant Principal at East Sussex College, returned to the university to present his insight into teaching to our PGCE and School Direct student PE teachers.

Mark trained to teach at Brighton on our undergraduate Physical Education BA(Hons) with Qualified Teacher Status and graduated twenty years ago.

Trainees learnt more about the use of Google classroom and innovative ways to assess student progress such as video and verbal feedback, interactive assessment of learning and the use of flash cards, using mobile devices. The trainees were also able to learn teaching in action, more about the latest revision resources available to students, as well as being shown how to utilise Twitter and AI as an educational tool.

PGCE and School Direct Physical Education route leader, Dr Gary Stidder said: “This was a great opportunity for our PE student teachers to gain valuable experience of post-16 physical education courses and ways in which the teaching and learning of these courses can enhance student progress either into apprenticeships or university degree courses.

“It was extremely beneficial for them to hear from an experienced practitioner which has contributed to their professional development with respect to the Standards for Qualifying to Teach.”
