students on the river - some in it!

Rafting day for trainee PE teachers

A group of 50 students headed to the Cuckmere River and Buzz Active Outdoor Centre at the start of their degree.

The students are studying Physical Education BA(Hons) with QTS (qualified teacher status) and the trip provided a great way for students to get to know each other and work together.

During the day students experienced raft building, rafting and a hike over the Seven Sisters. The trip forms part of the Outdoor Adventurous Activities (OAA) module and enabled students to kick off the new academic year with a bang and perhaps some soggy trainers!

During that time the University has forged strong partnerships with The Cuckmere Canoe Centre and Buzz Active, who run the activities. The team have facilitated incredibly strong learning experiences for the University students and supported staff wholeheartedly whatever the weather!

This year’s trip was organised by Principal Lecturer Kevin Morton who said: “The rafting day is always a highlight in the calendar, for students and staff alike. Everyone gets so much out of the trip and bonds are made in welcome week that will be kept for a lifetime.

From September 2024 our sport students will move to their new home in Brighton – the Brighton, Falmer campus is currently redesigned, renovated and upgraded in preparation.

Kevin added: “Activities like these are a vital part of student’s social development early on in their course and help to ensure that they feel a part of the university.

“Although our new home will be away from the Cuckmere River and the overwhelming talents of Buzz Active, we’re already planning for next year as we head down to Brighton for our new adventure.”
