Water sports afternoon for PE students
A group of physical education students spent an afternoon paddle boarding and kayaking at Buzz Active. The event was funded by Belong @ Brighton and the Brighton Students’ Union.
The event was designed to develop students skills and attributes to become change-makers and engaged global citizens in the future. Outdoor adventurous activities (OAA) like these help to enhance confident communication – an essential requirement for the students as they prepare as physical education teachers.
Principal Lecturer in physical education, Kevin Morton, said: “The water sports strengthened the students’ knowledge of the OAA and aquatic curricula, giving them a greater capacity to disseminate content, teaching points, and experiences, to the younger learners they will support in the future.
“The activities focussed their skills on critical thinking and problem solving – enhancing their capacity to become solution-oriented innovators, motivating themselves and their teammates to succeed.”
In the water-based activities, they had the opportunity to gain experiences unlike anything they have done on their degree, or possibly ever before. They had to trust their instructors and one another, to complete the tasks successfully.
Apart from having a great afternoon on the water the activities strengthened their awareness of their own aptitude to work independently, highlighting any weaknesses and potential future goals they may strive to achieve.
