Trainees organise revision day for local secondary school

PGCE and School Direct Trainee PE teachers organised a V-Cert revision day for 60 year 10 pupils from Peacehaven Community School.

The focus of the day was to develop the pupils understanding of health and fitness specifically related to Unit 3 of the NCFE Level 1/2 Technical Award V-Cert qualification now being offered in some secondary schools.

The V-cert qualification in sport provides pupils with the introductory skills to either start a career in sport or progress within employment in the sector. This qualification can also prepare learners for further education and gives a good introduction to sport vocation.

Pupils were provided with revision sessions during the day associated with the qualification specification.

Head of PE at Peacehaven Community School, and University of Brighton graduate, James Clarke  said: “Our pupils gain important study skills from this event and enhance their own subject knowledge. The trainee PE teachers were highly professional and extremely well organised in each of their lessons and provided very useful resources and materials.”

PGCE and School Direct Route leader for Physical Education, Dr Gary Stidder, said: “Experiences such as these provide the trainees with important practical and theoretical skills required to teach post 14 qualifications in PE which are increasing at an unprecedented rate in secondary schools.

“The repertoire of skills now required of contemporary teachers of PE are vastly different and classroom-based theory lessons are part of the skill set they require. This gives our Trainees valuable experience and builds up their confidence in this area.”
