Paramedic students work with the fire service during simulation exercise

Final year Paramedic Science BSc(Hons) students took part in a series of simulation exercises at Maresfield Fire and Rescue Training Centre in Sussex giving them the opportunity to put into practice everything they had learned throughout their studies.

The activity focused on interprofessional working, management of trauma, safe scene working and major incidents

Working alongside colleagues from the fire service the student paramedics attended simulated road traffic collisions. The students were tasked with responding to, and manging, multiple patient scenarios.

First year student paramedics also took part in the event acting as casualties with simulated injuries created by a special effects artist.

Real-world simulation is an important aspect of our degree to help ensure the students are as prepared as possible for when they start their paramedic careers.

Mark Durrell, Paramedic Science BSc(Hons) course leader said: “We took our students to Maresfield Fire and Rescue training centre to provide an opportunity to be truly immersed in high-fidelity simulation in high stress scenarios.

“The students get the opportunity to work collaboratively with other services alongside practicing highly skilled paramedic interventions in challenging situations.

“This event is one of the highlights of the teaching year with students continuously giving positive feedback about how much they enjoyed the challenge.”
