CIMSPA update

The University has worked closely with the Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA) since it became a Higher Education Partner in January 2018.

The partnership has resulted in lots of benefits for our students including discounted student-affiliate membership. CIMSPA also endorse our Sport Management and Sport Coaching courses ensuring they meet industry standards and provide graduates with the knowledge and skills that employers have identified as most valuable.

The relationship goes from strength to strength:

CIMSPA National Youth Panel
A smiling photo of FarranWe reported last year that Sport Management student, Farran Leach, was appointed to the CIMSPA National Youth Panel.

Since taking on the role Farran has been kept busy and recently took part in a European-wide student consultation on sport and employability.

The project was led by Cardiff Metropolitan University and the principal investigator said:  “Farran was incredibly thoughtful and articulate, a real credit to herself, your course and the University.”

Great work Farran!

Graduate appointed as Commercial Director
Ollie Bell, who graduated from the first cohort of our sports coaching degree in 2012, has been appointed as Commercial Director for CIMSPA.

His role will see him work with national governing bodies, employers and the wider workforce, plus commercial organisations such as Apple.

Ollie said: “My degree has shown me that reflection is key.

“University taught me to write, to research, to think differently, to challenge ideology and to be creative.”

Many congratulations Ollie!

Principal Lecturer appointed as Higher Education Rep
Dr Marc Keech has been appointed as Higher Education Rep on CIMSPA’s National Professional Development Committee for Community Sport Development and Management.

Prior to this Marc spent three years on the CIMSPA National Professional Development Board and will continue to contribute to the board through his new committee role.

Marc said: “I’m looking forward to contributing to the National Professional Development Committee which oversees the CIMSPA Professional Standards for Community Sport.

“As the country looks to recover from the impact of the pandemic, community sport professionals and their organisations have a vital role to play in supporting the physical and mental well-being of participants of all ages and backgrounds.”

Senior lecturer appointed to National Moderator role
Photo of Flo coachingFlo Pietzsch, Senior Lecturer and course leader of our Strength and Conditioning MSc, has been appointed as National Moderator for the CIMSPA/UKSCA Strength and Conditioning Professional Standards.

Flo’s background in elite sport alongside his academic position makes him ideally positioned to take on the role of assessing Strength and Conditioning degrees to see if they meet the CIMSPA Professional Standards for endorsement. Flo joined the University of Brighton from the Lawn Tennis Association where he was Lead GB Fed Cup strength and conditioning coach tennis whose squad included players Heather Watson and Laura Robson.

Flo said: “It is a real honour to be recognised as having the expertise to assist CIMSPA and UKSCA in their endorsement process within higher education.

“It will ensure our new BSc in Strength and Conditioning is well placed to meet all future professional requirements and assist future students with their employability.”
