Doctoral Fellowship for PhD student

School of Sport and Service Management PhD student, Sean Heath, has been awarded a Social Science and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) Doctoral Fellowship.

SSHRC is the most prestigious funding agency and scholarship offered to Canadian researchers and the Doctoral Fellowship includes three years of funding, totalling £35,000.

Sean is a social anthropologist specialising in the body, movement, the senses, and human-water interactions.

Prior to starting his PhD at Brighton in 2018, Sean completed his undergraduate and postgraduate studies at Simon Fraser University in Canada. His masters research was on youth Canadian swimmers.

Sean’s PhD at the University of Brighton concentrates on pain and injury amongst competitive youth swimmers in the UK. His supervisors include Dr Thomas Carter, Dr Alex Channon and Dr Gary Brickley.

He is also a member of the university’s Sport and Leisure Cultures research enterprise group.

Sean said of his award: “I am extremely grateful and honoured to be the recipient of a Doctoral Fellowship for the coming few years. This is life changing.”
