V-Cert day
Trainee PE teachers organised a V-Cert day for year 10 pupils from Peacehaven Community School.
The focus of the day was to develop the pupils understanding of fitness and sport specifically related to Unit 3 of the new V-Cert qualification now being offered in some secondary schools.
Pupils were provided with a presentation about readiness for physical activity and planning an appropriate programme. This was followed by a series of practical activities and the completion of reflective journals.
The new V-cert qualification in sport provides pupils with the introductory skills to either start a career in sport or progress within employment in the sector. This qualification can also prepare learners for higher or further education and gives a good introduction to sport vocation.
PGCE and School Direct Route leader for Physical Education, Dr Gary Stidder, said: “Experiences such as these provide trainee teachers of physical education with important practical and theoretical skills required to teach post 14 qualifications in PE which are increasing at an unprecedented rate in secondary schools.
“Unless pupils are following an accredited award in PE in key stage four there is a danger that they will have no PE lessons at all and that is why PE teachers are finding more inclusive ways of offering accredited courses such as the V-Cert in Sport.”
