Managing Change M level module
This module aims to develop your insight into, and critical understanding of, change management theories/frameworks and their applicability to practice.
Overview
This module is designed to help practitioners develop their insight and critical awareness of change management theories. The outcomes are practice-based and the students’ practice settings and experience are utilised for learning and assessment purposes. The module design is such that the learning outcomes correlate directly with Core and Specific dimensions of the NHS KSF for those working in addition to the recent Sustainability and Transformation Plans (STPs). This ensures applicability to individual development needs via a module that is deeply rooted in practice.

Teaching Strategies
Staff facilitating the sessions will utilise a range of teaching and learning methods specific to the topic being taught. These are intended to reflect and enhance the main learning outcomes.
This module aims to develop students’ insight into, and critical understanding of, change management theories/frameworks and their applicability to practice.
Students have access to a range of study materials and resources via our Online Learning platform.The overall programme will therefore provide students with the opportunity to develop critical skills in change management via a combination of lectures, discussion and case study development.

- Analysis of personal, professional and organisational reactions to change
- Planning change and the role of the change agent
- Leadership of the planned and unplanned change
- Leading and Managing Change in a complex and uncertain environments
- Project Management, organising the change process
- Organisation management theory
- Organisational culture and its inextricable link to leadership
- Strategies for change; the experience of re-structuring, re-engineering and re-location
- The concept of the learning organisation
- Change theory, chaos theory and postmodernism
Assessment
3000 words essay.
The assignment provides students with an opportunity to demonstrate wide reading, in-depth understanding and the ability to synthesize issues/arguments and theories that have been studied in the module.
The assessment may be either a critical analysis of a planned change or retrospective analysis of a retrospective analysis of a change that has already taken place in the work or organisational contexts. If the writer is to play (or has played) a key role in the change process this role needs to be included and critically analysed.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module the student will be able to
-
- evaluate the range and appropriateness of the change management literature available
- explore with confidence the strengths and limitations of specific change theories
- develop proposals for using appropriate change theories in their work situation
- analyse the relative advantages and disadvantages of change theories in the context of change managed in their practice setting
Who can apply?
Open to all health and social care professionals, for example Doctors, nurses, social workers, paramedics and paramedic practitioners, midwives, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, podiatrists and health visitors.

Taught sessions at Falmer campus from the 11th -15th June 2018

Module status
This 20 credit level 7 masters module can contribute to a postgraduate certificate, diploma or masters award, in any health related masters course.
It can also be taken as a single stand alone module for general personal development or CPD with or without assessment.
