Mock assessment day
Undergraduate and postgraduate students at the School of Sport and Service Management took part in a mock assessment day organised by the university’s careers service.
The event was linked to two modules, Employability Enterprise and Innovation, and Professional Practice, but was opened up to all students. Many organisations run assessment days as part of their recruitment process and the event aimed to give students a head start for when they graduate.
Capgemini, a global consultancy company, sent four of their consultants who worked in areas including IT, Finance and HR down for the afternoon.
Students took part in ‘speed interviews’; a short sharp interview with feedback on their responses being given at the end. They also took part in team tower building and an app development activity where they were judged on team building, how they interacted with each other and performed as a group.
Principal lecturer and Leader for Employability Enterprise and Innovation, Adam Jones, said: “This was a fantastic opportunity for our students to gain practical experience in a supported environment of what assessment centres are like and improve graduate employability prospects.”
International event management student Rhiannon echoed Adam’s thoughts: “I went into this experience without know what I was in for. I found that I went away gaining so much knowledge about assessment days, and how I present myself to employers.
“Mock assessment days are an invaluable resource that everyone should be taking advantage off. Even if you think you’re not interested in the subject, you might find it surprises you!”
Tom Harries a consultant at Capgemini who attended a similar assessment day to get his current role said: “We were all really impressed with the enthusiasm and energy that came from the University of Brighton students and we look forward to seeing them at assessment days in the future.”
