Trainee teachers get surfing
Trainee Physical Education teachers were introduced to the latest Californian craze amongst children as part of their induction into the PGCE and School Direct Physical Education Teacher Training Programme.
Street Surfing is a combination of skateboarding, surfing and snowboarding on two wheels and is proving to capture the interest of pupils in schools.
PE course leader Dr Gary Stidder said: “Street Surfing is a physical activity that requires athleticism, balance, co-ordination, agility and stamina which can be applied across other physical activities and potentially engage a wider and greater population of pupils in physical education lessons.
“The street surfing workshop is designed to give trainee teachers of physical education subject knowledge enhancement and add to their repertoire of skills so that they have the confidence to introduce new and alternative forms of physical education to pupils.
“The university loan system ensures that all trainee teachers of PE have access to the equipment and can take the street surfers into their host schools during periods of school-based training.”
