Slam dunk for Sadie

University of Brighton alumna Sadie Mason MBE has recently been appointed as Team Manager for Great Britain’s U18 Women’s Basketball Team. Sadie, who is the Chief Executive at Active Sussex, graduated in 1985 with a Sports Science BSc(Hons), then again in 1986 with a Physical Education and Science PGCE, has had a lifelong passion for basketball.

Sadie explained: “I was introduced to basketball at secondary school aged 11 and I loved it! I represented Newham at the London Youth Games, at which time I had an inspirational female coach in my formative years at the London Central YMCA Bobcats (Lesley Mowbray RIP). She introduced me to playing women’s national league at age 14 and I have never looked back.”

Sadie brings decades of experience to her role and her achievements include: England U18 Women – Team Manager since 2012 to date, England U15, U17 & U19 (capt.), England senior international player (39 caps) GB Students International: three successive World University Games 1983, 1985 and 1987, GB senior international player (1984), former English and Scottish NL Division 1 player (20 years’ experience), currently playing GB Masters Basketball tournaments in UK, Ireland and Europe.

Sadie is on a mission to inspire current and future female basketball generations and said of the recent appointment: “I am honoured to be able to represent Great Britain, and hopefully to continue to be a role model to younger players, supporting them as they progress along their international pathway. I believe the sport of basketball has so much to offer, on and off the court, so I am happy to be an ambassador for the game and in particular for female participants. #ThisGirlCan.”
