NH 6170- Operating Theatre Practice module

Continuing and Postgraduate Education in Health Sciences (CPGE).

In 2011 a report by the National Confidential Enquiry into Patient Outcome and Death (NCEPOD) has identified that there are significant challenges regarding the identification and care pathway of high risk surgical patients.

This module has been developed to enable registered nurses, operating department practitioners and midwives working in operating theatre departments to extend and develop their knowledge and skills to provide quality care of the highest standard for patients throughout the perioperative phase. 

It will enable students to:

1. Critically review the legal and ethical issues in the peri-operative environment and the responsibilities of the peri-operative practitioner.
2. Critically evaluate, analyse and effectively manage risks and hazards associated with the patient and the peri-operative environment.
3. Anticipate and respond professionally to patients varying needs throughout their peri-operative pathway, including dignity and respect.
4. Engage in critical debate and evaluate standards of infection control and prevention.
5. Reflect on practice through deeper knowledge and understanding of roles within the operating department and the provision of evidence-based practice.
