Graduation success for Occupational Therapy

 

On February 11^th students from both our pre-registration courses who completed their studies in the summer received their degrees at the University of Brighton Winter Awards Ceremony.  Staff attended too and were delighted to hear how well they were all doing.

From the information that we have we know that for the graduates from both courses have secured occupational therapy posts as follows:

21 are working in physical services (most in inpatient hospitals but also neuro rehab, community physical and community paeds)

9 are working in mental health services

5 secured jobs in special education services

3 got their first posts as OTs with social services

Congratulations to them all.

Dr David Haines, Course Leader BSc Occupational Therapy, also received his doctoral award at the ceremony for his PhD research “Occupational therapy supporting people with profound intellectual disabilities to engage in occupations at home”.  In this, he used a qualitative case study methodology to explore a single case of an occupational therapist’s work with five people with profound intellectual disabilities and those supporting them.  The findings had two overarching themes: (1) the impact of shifting support and leadership cultures on engagement and (2) characteristics of occupational therapy, which: aimed to create and sustain cultural change; had a particular understanding of authentic occupational engagement; and sought to work with the staff team in a collaborative and empowering way.

Dr Channine Clarke also received a University ‘Excellence in Facilitating and Empowering Learning’ staff award and received £250 for CPD activity. She is using this to attend the COT annual conference in Harrogate in June and hopes to see some of you there.
