Students get creative with alternative PE
PE, sport and exercise science, sport studies and sport coaching students presented and experienced a range of eclectic and innovative physical activities as part of their Level 5 assessment in alternative activities. Presentations included Mission Impossible, Aquatic Wipe-out, The Cube, QR Code climbing and Aqua-Cross.
The module is very popular amongst students and provides them with an opportunity to be more creative with respect to curriculum design in schools. Research has shown that more and more schools are extending PE provision to include a wider range of non-traditional and alternative activities that have greater appeal to a wider population of pupils which are both physical and educational.
Module leader Jon Binney said: “Our students never failed to amaze me. In the past they have adapted films and television shows that most children will be familiar such as The Hunger Games, Quidditch and I’m a Celebrity, and adapted these to a physical education context.
“The level of creativity and imagination is very impressive. This year the activities have been even more impressive and could easily be implemented in schools as an alternative to the traditional team games that often dominate curriculum time.”
