Physical Education trainees experience Ultimate Frisbee
Trainee Physical Education teachers returned to the University of Brighton having spent time training in secondary schools and were introduced to a new and innovative team game as part of their subject knowledge enhancement.
Ultimate Frisbee is an exciting, non-contact team sport, played by thousands of children all over the world. It mixes the best features of sports such as Soccer, Basketball, American Football and Netball into a demanding game.
Many schools now include Ultimate Frisbee in their PE curriculum as an alternative to more traditional competitive team sports which has greater appeal to much wider population of pupils.
It has all the components of goal-throwing invasion games where the object of the game is to manoevre an object through a defended territory to an agreed target within set parameters over a prescribed period of time.
PGCE PE student Oliver Prior said: “This is a great game to teach pupils in schools. It has certainly helped me to understand that we need to teach pupils the principals of invasion games through a variety of alternative team games other than the typical diet of football and rugby.”
School Direct PE trainee Sean Holt added: “I am convinced that alternative team games such as Ultimate Frisbee are more inclusive compared to the more traditional team games that tend to be offered in schools. Ultimate Frisbee is a game that requires cardiovascular fitness, tactical awareness and technical ability and can be adapted to suit each individual pupil.”
