Wheelchair Basketball Workshops
PGCE and School Direct trainee PE teachers took part in a three hour wheelchair basketball workshop at the School of Sport and Service Management.
The programme run in conjunction with Albion in the Community covered both theoretical and practical aspects of the game and is designed to give future recruits to the PE teaching profession an alternative to more traditional team sports usually taught in secondary schools.
PGCE PE student Megan Hill said: “Not only is wheelchair basketball a great alternative activity it is also a very good educational tool for PE teachers to educate pupils in secondary schools.
“Many secondary schools now have pupils who are wheelchair users and the chances are that PE teachers will need to plan inclusive activities for these pupils. It is also an activity that pupils who are non-wheelchair users can try in order to help them appreciate what it is like to play games such as basketball in a wheelchair.”
