Live experience for event students
In the second year International Event Management BA(Hons) students put their learning into practice and design, develop, deliver and evaluate their own event as part of a group. So far this year students have undertaken a tea dance raising money for the British Legion, a Christmas Cabaret raising money for Anne Bickmore Charity and a Save the Pier Band Night with headline act of Nikki Cislyn from Clean Bandit.
Final year student Lina Luque Garcia’s on her ‘live event experience’:
“Our event had the purpose of raising money for the Christmas lights in Eastbourne. Our team came up with the idea of putting on an authentic Rock and Roll concert with a live band, disco, jive dance class and a raffle. The event was hosted in a well-known hotel on the Eastbourne seafront and we sold out!
“The experience of actually putting this event in real life was really important because there are many factors that I had never considered. One of the most enriching learning outcomes was learning how to manage my own team.
“I found that to select the right team was the key of success, as everyone had different skills, personalities and ways in which they work; it also gave me a good understating that if problems are to be solved quickly, everyone must have clearly defined roles and expectations, and know what their responsibilities are.
“I not only enjoyed this experience but it has helped me to be self-confident, understand my skills and work on weakness. It was also so rewarding to know that all the effort doing the marketing research, account management, volunteer management, time management, meticulous planning and risk analysis, produced a successful event and £600 was raised on the night.
“I am currently working with two clients (Latin bands) in Brighton and without this experience I would not be able to understand the client needs, requirements and behaviours.”
