Trainee PE teachers work with local pupils

Over 100 pupils from East Sussex secondary schools attended a widening participation event run by PGCE and School Direct PE trainee teachers at the School of Sport and Service Management in Eastbourne.

Year 9 and 10 pupils took part in a series of activities designed to promote leadershDSCF5920ip, team work, problem solving, decision making and communication skills. Activities include Ultimate Frisbee, Street Surfing, Kinball, Trust games and Cheerleading.

Principal Lecturer Dr Gary Stidder who organised the day said: “Experiences such as this provide trainee PE teachers with valuable pedagogical skills and enhances subject knowledge outside of the traditional PE curriculum.

“For the pupils it is an opportunity to try activities they are unlikely to have taken part in at school and a break from competitive team games which do not have universal appeal to the vast majority of secondary school pupils.”
