Awards for our alumni
We are delighted to announce that two of our past graduates gave been recognised for their contributions to education.
Stuart Townsend, who graduated in 2006 from the Physical Education BA(Hons) with QTS, was awarded The Argus teacher of the year award. Stuart is head of PE at Brighton Aldridge Academy. Read more on The Argus website.
Yvonne Powell was awarded an OBE in this years Queen’s Birthday Honours for services to education and children’s services to become Dame Yvonne Powell. Yvonne is head of Walworth Academy in London and has kept her links with the university enabling current students to visit the school to gain experience of working in a large urban multi-cultural environment.
Yvonne and graduate Terry Burchett, who is successfully completing his NQT year at Walworth Academy, recently returned to the school to give a lecture to third year students. The talk detailed the rewards and challenges of teaching from two very contrasting perspectives: NQT and head teacher.
Keeping the family tradition of teaching Yvonne’s niece, Gemma Anderson, has also just graduated from the School of Sport and Service Management and takes up her first teaching post in September.
