Success for final year Sport and Exercise Science Student!

Louisa Beale, Ken Tompsett and Hannah Peters (2)Sport and Exercise Science BSc(Hons) student Hannah Peters (pictured far right) has won a coveted place on the highly competitive NHS Scientist Training Programme.

The salaried graduate-entry programme will see Hannah working in Cardiac Science at the Hampshire Hospital Trust and will lead to a senior healthcare scientist role.

Hannah, who will graduate in July, developed her skills working with patients on the University’s Active Hearts Cardiac Rehabilitation Programme.

She said: “This experience really helped my application as cardiac science involves lots of patient contact.  I have learnt so much about different cardiac conditions, appropriate exercise programming and the importance of an individualised patient-centred approach.  It has been very rewarding being able to contribute to each patient’s recovery.”

Hannah’s Personal and Professional Development assignment, A behaviour change intervention to enhance exercise adherence after cardiac rehabilitation, will improve the Cardiac Rehabilitation programme for future participants.

Louisa Beale, Senior Lecturer in Sport and Exercise Science and Active Hearts Programme Co-ordinator said: “Hannah has shown real commitment to Active Hearts, and has combined her academic skills and practical experience to produce a report on how to improve the Active Hearts service to better support patients to sustain healthy lifestyles after they have completed the supervised programme”

Rob Jones, Cardiac Rehab Exercise Specialist said: “Hannah has been a real credit to the programme.  She is perceptive and empathic, a friendly face, always there to listen, guide and reassure the patients. She has worked above and beyond the requirements for her work placement.”

Rob and Louisa have nominated Hannah for a Santander Student Award for Community Engagement and Volunteering.
