Visual portfolios are undoubtedly one of the most important forms of presenting work as an artist. They are essential for showcasing your creative identity, standing as an introductory representation into your unique skill sets, interests and qualifications. The presentation can vary but it is best to have as many versions as possible to hand, as different circumstances will require different modes of presentation. The most common forms of presentation are physical prints(kept in a sleek box), digital, pdf, websites. The theme throughout a portfolio should be coherent and relevant, considering purpose and audience whilst keeping to the authenticity of yourself as an artist. The work included should be a variety of personal and commissioned work, all of the best quality that can be. Choosing the images must be done with care and specific consideration – with the most thought and attention going towards the first and last image.
Having compared the portfolios of Martin Seeds and Zoe Childerley you can see the differences and similarities within their portfolios. Both include a similar amount pages, 29(Zoe) and 32(Martin) which is a good numerical guideline as portfolios go. Zoe’s portfolio ‘Beyond the Pale‘ includes an title page, artist biography and an explanatory description of her work and process. Her images have titles and short technical technical and aesthetic annotations. It is clear and concise and allows for the viewer to have a coherent understanding of Zoe’s projects and interests. As for Martins portfolio, although the content is similar – images, gallery layouts and process development, the writing is minimal in comparison. He does not include a artist biography or an in depth explanation of his works. The images are left to speak for themselves. One must make these kind of decisions; how much writing to include, which images to choose, how to lay them out and so on that best compliment the work. Overall one wants to ensure they encompass a clear and authentic show of their creative identity, relating to the expectations of the specific client/circumstance.
