Chinatown Distortion Edits

I then decided that I wanted to completely blur the subject out of focus. I think this experiment fits the best with my concept. I like how when you look at the image you get a sense of uncertainty and confusion which is what you feel when you have social isolation. I like that these edits have the effect of a ghost in the crowd which is exactly what I wanted.

Chinatown Primary Distortion Edits

I then began experimenting with distorting the faces of people in my images. The first distorting effect I used was just fuzzing out the faces of the main figures in my edited images.

I thought this was a good starting point however, I only did this for a couple of images because I didn’t think it was a strong enough edit and it wasn’t what I was imagining.

The second type of experimentation I did was completely blocking out a figure in my pictures and replacing them with a glitch or a mixture of glitches. I didn’t like this image because  you cant tell what the shape is. I think to improve this edit I could have gone around the person rather than blocking them completely out.

I decided to visit London’s Chinatown because when I visited the ones in Manchester and Liverpool they were unsuccessful trips. I wanted to go when it was busy so I could capture a variety of people and have a good atmosphere for my photos, so I went on a Sunday evening and I captured the hustle and bustle of people going out for dinner or just shopping for food. I thought this shoot was really successful because the lighting was moody and due to the artificial lights of the shops and bars it created a nice atmosphere for my photos. I then went on to shoot in the tube station, however although I liked the photos that I got I don’t think they really fit with my other images.

This shoot was focusing on capturing the Jewish community. I wanted to photograph the families coming out of the synagogues. However,  I didn’t want to be insensitive with this shoot, so I decided to try a different approach of taking them through the window as if I was looking into their personal lives.

I thought this would be a nice concept because unlike the other shoots where it was a direct photo, with this one by photographing through glass I think this creates more of a barrier between the concept and subject.

I went around Liverpool city centre and again like my other shoots I wanted to focus on people and crowds. However, for this shoot, I wanted to get some more distorted images. I think this shoot was really successful and I’m really happy with how the lighting made the photos have some depth to them.

One morning I woke up and the morning light through my blinds created a lovely shadow across my wall. I like the distortion my shadow made with the natural light. It reminded me of the photos by Francesca Woodman because of her use of distortion and how she is in all of her photos.

I went to Bury Market, which has been voted the best market in Britain. I wanted to go here to do a photoshoot because its full of different cultures and ages and because the open market is only on Wednesdays and Saturday there was a lot of people there which was great for my concept. I like how I captured real people in their real lives and got a lot of candid shots.

I like these photos because they fit with my concept of social isolation. I think by being shot far away it emphasises the feeling of the loneliness. I also like that they are shot in black and white because the lighting and little bit of vignette makes the viewer focus on the person.

I went to Eccles tram station to capture everyday people in the moment. I wanted to photograph in black and white similar to the artist I have researched like the photos by Yutaka Takanashi and Miyako Ishiuchi. I wanted to get candid photos so they weren’t posed or faked. I like the lighting in these photos because, in my opinion, they create more of an atmosphere and give the photos more depth.
