CWL Stage 2 Preview: The Race for Playoffs

With $500,000 up for grabs in Stage 2 of the CWL Pro League, I took a deeper look at how I expect Division A to play out after the first week of matches.

Red Reserve (3-0): New boy Skrapz paints Columbus Red

With the addition of Matthew “Skrapz” Marshall from Unilad, Red Reserve ran rampant in week one of the league taking down the former back to back champions Team Kaliber 3-2 in a 5 map thriller. Red also showed they are still the best team in Europe beating British rivals Splyce and Epsilon 3-1 and 3-0 respectively.

The biggest takeaway from week one was how successful the role switch between Zer0 and Joe has been as Joe seems far more comfortable playing the flex role in respawn game modes

Team Kaliber (3-1): Kenny goes Clutch

The addition of Ian “Enable” Wyatt had people doubting this squad coming into the league but if anything it has solved the reoccurring problem tK had – the individual roles. Accuracy has moved to main AR and Enable has taken over the flex role, this has been reflected in their respawn game with a 71% win rate in Hardpoint.

The play of the week was made by Kenny against Echo Fox on Hardpoint Gibraltar where he killed the entire enemy team with one clip on the Pit Center hill to carry his team to a 250-249 victory.

Splyce (1-3): King Jurd is back

If it was not for some miraculous plays by Jordan “Jurd” Crowley in search and destroy against EG then this could have easily been a 0-4 week for Splyce. The aggressive SMG player clutched up when they needed it most including a 1v4 clutch while the enemy had the bomb down.

Splyce need to bounce back next week if they want any hope in reaching the stage 2 playoffs, I would suggest they go back and watch some VODs on other teams as they finished the week 1-5 in S&D.

What is wrong with FaZe Clan? (0-3)

After a somewhat suprising win at stage one playoffs, it was unclear as to what FaZe we were going to see.

ZooMa came out to play in his usual hyper-aggressive play style, finishing map 4 against Team Kaliber with over 50 kills but Faze still prevailed.

What to expect from week 2

  • Red Reserve need to push on from a great week one, it would not be surprising if they were to finish unbeaten after the first 2 weeks.
  • FaZe clan must have a good week winning at least 3 matches to have any chance making it into the top 4 at the end of the regular season.
