Ideas for my zine

After experimenting in book binding techniques I found that this is what I want to use for my final zine. I liked seeing the pages together to get the hand made look. I have decided that I want a mixture of digital illustrations and hand drawn sketches, I have used both throughout my book and I think they will create an interesting contrast throughout the zine. I know I want to include colour but also line drawings, I just need to work out the sequence and how I am going to place them to look interesting.

Typography

at the moment I’m finding typography hard. I think I need to research more into different techniques and find what I am good at. So far my work on fonts doesn’t inspire me and I’m hoping to produce more work of this type to include in my zine.

Reflections from drawing workshops

I really enjoyed using new techniques in some of the drawing workshops. I felt this pushed me out of my comfort zone and therefore I think I created some interesting illustrations. I have used these techniques further throughout my book as I found they truly showed off my skills.

These included continuous line, missing out some bits of the drawing, negative space and times drawings. I find I mostly like continuous line and using block paint.

saatchi

I visited the saatchi gallery to do some initial research, I wanted to find something that would inspire me or give me a lead.

I knew already that I liked  maurizio anzeri as I have studied him before. In relation to this project I thought about covering the face a how that removed identity. I liked how he removed peoples identity’s but in a delicate way.

I then found the work of Dale Lewis and immediately was inspired. I liked the way he used Brenda’s in his work such as Nike and Adidas. He also shows stereotypes associated with these brands and that lead me to thinking ‘are we what we wear?’

Identity and the body

When I received this brief I was excited because I knew there’s many ways to interpret it. Immediately I wanted to do some research and pick a smaller theme that’s more specific.

My original ideas were:

Removing identity, do we need it in our lives and what does it really mean to have an identity.

Do we create our own identity’s or are they created for us by others perceptions.

Why we are obsessed with clothing brands, does it define who we are, and does it change people’s perception of you, do brands make you the person you are.

Differnt groups in society and how similar identity traits bring people together

Rave culture

I wanted to touch apon this subculture because I was interested in the neon colours and casual clubbing style that was seen. Rave culture was massive in the 50s and 60s and fuelled by drugs such as MDMA. In particular I liked the neon clothes that glow in the dark night club lights. This shows how people were do dedicated to raving they’d by clothes that would only shine in that specific light. I was also drawn to this subculture because it was created in London England so it was so close to home for me and I find it fascinating what happened in underground secret clubs in London.

New Romantics

Originally what drew me into look at this subculture was the amazing bright colours that were used in all aspects. I loved the idea that music influenced as well as celebrities such as David Bowie. I began to look at makeup and even experimented with some on myself. I enjoyed using makeup in a completely different way to what I’m used to and felt very inspired by this. The patterns, prints and fabrics seen in this subculture also really inspired me and made me want to experiment layering. New Romantics is something I’ve never looked into before and I can say it is fascinating how they used fashion to create a subculture

Minimalism

I have always been interested in minimalism and when I got a subcultures brief I thought this would suit perfectly. I started to look at designers such as Gareth Pugh to see similar themes and what people look for when they are a minimalist. I wanted to look into what minimalists would wear and I found that clean white garments with geometric or asymmetric shapes where the main feature of this trend. whilst collaging I found a theme kept arising, this was the classic white shirt. To me a white shirt is a staple for minimalism and is so classic that it has never been lost throughout fashion. This piece is timeless and this is why I decided to look particularly at this one piece of fashion.

100 words about me

I am currently studying at the University of Brighton doing Fashion Communication with Business Studies. Previously I have studied Textile Art and Fashion Design. It was only last year when I was studying Foundation Art at UCA Epsom that I realised I wanted to do Fashion Communication as my next step. I have always been interested in the styling side of this course and this is what drew me to apply. I am also interested to learn more about photography and shooting. Photography is something I have never properly tried so I am intrigued to see if I’ll like it.
